Re: Florida Nuptial Flights and Species

Nightxwolf, I know and that's what makes them a pretty interesting species.
I have two queens now! One Solenopsis invicta and one trap-jaw. Trap-jaws are pretty interesting, not only because of their appendages, but because they're a recent addition to North Florida.

Re: Keeping a Formicarium Outside

That's not a problem in Florida. The shade will keep it cool enough and it never gets below freezing either.

Keeping a Formicarium Outside

List below some of your tips for keeping your colony in the outdoors. 1. Make sure predators or scavengers can't get in. Raise it up off of the ground and put a lid on it. 2. Keep it under a shelter so no rain can flood and drown your little citizens. 3. Change the food out more often so no other an...

Re: Question about formicarium

It really doesn't matter. If you want to get a Hybrid nest though, make sure it's for your breed. Just make sure that it's not too big for your ants. Otherwise, the ants will designate one of the chambers for graveyard, garbage, or poop. That could get moldy very quick.

Substitute Deterrent

Does anyone know of a good barrier besides Fluon, baby powder, and petroleum jelly? Those aren't exactly things I have laying around the house haha. I heard olive oil can work and I was thinkin baking powder or Chapstick might work. Not quite sure. List some ideas or things you know below.

Re: Florida Nuptial Flights and Species

Now that I've done some observation, Solenopsis invicta makes up the majority of the colonies around here. Which is extremely ironic considering they're an imported species!

Re: Florida Nuptial Flights and Species

I'm afraid the beach isn't an option for me. The gulf is about 45 min away and the Atlantic is about 1.5 hrs away. I can definitely check in grassy areas beside our pines though. We have a pond, a large yard, pines, and an old cow field (probably full of snakes of now). I did some research on niger ...

Florida Nuptial Flights and Species

Hello, I live in Northern Florida. I was wondering if anyone knew a good species that was having its nuptial flight about now. I'm an absolute beginner and would love something that doesn't bite haha. I recently captured a velvet ant, thinking it was a pogo, and had to release it *facepalm*. Any hel...
