Re: GAN Farmers - How has your experience been?

Yeah I'm having the same issues and it's pretty aggravating. I've had one person ask me to ship ants to them(which no for many reasons including the survival of the colony) and someone even trying to get me to sell them an ant that lived in a different state. I'm at the point of giving up on selling...

You Know Your an Ant Keeper When

Every random worker you find in your house causes slight panic as you quickly ensure none of your colonies have escape holes. You have test tubes in every backpack you own just in case. You find yourself stating how gorgeous a specific queen ant is only for your friends to give you strange looks. An...

Re: Formicarium Suggestions?

Building your own Formicarium is easy and super fun. I made my own last night using a Tupperware, plaster, and hand carving tools. You get to be creative and it's super inexpensive(I only paid 1$ for two Tupperware bowls and already had plaster on hand). Plus you can get innovative using different s...

Re: camponotus queens living space too small?

I'd recommend a larger tube or seeing if she will willingly move into an alternate set up if your worried. You can get larger glass test tubes from craft stores that work great. I got one with an inch diameter to allow my Camponotus greater comfort. My last Camponotus lived in a much smaller testtub...

Re: Formica lasiodes Colony

So I ended up putting tape on the frosted plastic to improve visibility. Its still obscured but definitely better. Gonna find some actually scotch tape instead of packing tape and try that tomorrow.

Re: Formica lasiodes Colony

So tonight I ended up moving the colony into a plaster and Tupperware formicarium I made. Sadly visibility isn't great due to the Tupperware being frosted. I hadn't notice how much it obscured the inside of the nest until I had finished. Live and learn. Next time I'll make sure to get completely tra...

Re: Formica lasiodes Colony

I just realized I spelled it wrong. Formica lasioides is the correct spelling.

Dollar Store Bug Buckets

I found these neat little bug buckets at the dollar store. They have hooks on them so you can hook them to your bag, etc so you always have something on you in case you randomly spot a queen. The lids stay attached so you don't lost them as easily and they flip open pretty easily. The top has slots ...

Formica lasiodes Colony

My Formica colony is about 15 workers last I counted. They are finally starting to voyage out into their foraging area and actually checking it out. Even if they are being so stubborn as to not move out of the almost entirely dried test tube they currently are in. They are set up in a pencil case ri...

Camponotus vicinus Journal

I wanted to start journalling the growth of my Camponotus colony. So far she's my favorite queen mainly just because she's so big. Last night her largest larvae pupaeted and I can't wait for my first worker to eventually eclose. This queen has been one of my easiest, she laid a large amount soon aft...
