Do ants care if they're on plastic versus glass?
I've been trying to get my 12 worker solenopsis colony to move into a new test tube for a new week. The new tube should be better in terms of heat, light, and lack of mold. But the ants still won't move. Is it possible they're staying put because they like the current glass tube more than the new pl...

Re: Ideas for equipment to film ants
I've been experimenting with USB microscopes. I've bought two that couldn't actually take 1920*1080 pictures as their specs said, but https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089YH4N5R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this one is closer. I'm having some driver issues but hopefully I can ge...

Knowing how much to feed ants
I've had my colony of solenopsis invicta for about a month and one thing I'm unsure of is how much to feed them. I've been feeding them twice a week, but I noticed today that they keep returning to a insect corpse that it looks like they'd already stripped clean. Does that mean they're hungry, and I...

Re: Freezing insects to kill parasites?
I've always heard that parasites are killed in the freezer. Not bacteria, but multicellular animals.

Re: Mold on the cotton of my test tube
I have a similar issue, but with mold on the glass of the tube from when I spilled sugar water into their refuse pile. My ants are also refusing to move into the covered tube despite leaving the moldy one uncovered. Are they smart enough to realize that they need to abandon the moldy tube when the m...

How to deal with mold in test tube?
I've got a young Solenopsis colony in a test tube setup with, by my last count, 10 workers. A couple days ago I fed them and attached their tube to a small outworld. In the process, I spilled about a quarter mL of sugar water, which ran into their detritus pile. Now I've got a good amount of mold in...

Re: Feedback on formicarium idea
How big does my colony have to be before I can move them into a formicarium and have them dig a nest?

Re: Feedback on formicarium idea
#1 I would dig a small hole from the entrance to the surface, use like a stick to do it. #2 Put sand in the outworld section and don't have that part moist, keep the water in the nest #3 Yes, I would put some sort of cover on the glass though so they don't plaster dirt on the walls to keep you out....

Feedback on formicarium idea
I'm raising a colony of solenopsis, my first ever colony. I still have them in a test tube with no outworld. They've got about ten workers and a bunch of eggs, and I want to start thinking about their formicarium. There are three things that are important to me Able to see into the nest Ants dig the...

Re: First formicarium
there is a glue that you can use to contruct your terrarium. It forms a 'weld' for lack of a better word between the panes as it chemically binds them together. I have constructed a temporary setup from thin plexiglass myself and my ants didn't bother with the silicone at all I'm also thinking abou...
