Re: Can Queen ants fight?

Yes, queen ants can spray formic acid and in some species they can also sting. You can look and see if she has wing scars on the side of her thorax if she does have wing scars, then she is a queen. Thanks! It's really hard to see the scars, as she is in the test tube. I'll try again though. Also, j...

Can Queen ants fight?

Hi, I week ago, I thought I found a crematogaster queen. I've been trying to find this species for a very long time now. I'm still not sure whether it is a queen or not, but I'm leaning toward the 'not' side. But anyway, today (even though it is winter and very cold right now) I found a male alate c...

There are absolutely no lasius species in Australia.
Wait... really??

They looked exactly like Lasius Niger. Am I blind or something?

I thought they might be Iridomermyx but their workers were all black. Wow now I really don't know what species it is

Re: Colony not increasing in numbers

Hello there, What you can do, go to a petstore and ask if they sell meal worms or crickets. If they do you can buy some of those. The mealworms last long enough in the fridge. I got a box about 6 months or more ago and there are still enough alive in there. I would however check every 2-3 weeks or ...

Re: Ant Plants

Wow, I am really impressed with your knowledge of plants. My mum likes to keep plants, and I personally think they really change the atmosphere of a room. Although, I like ants alot better. But I'm planning to put some plants in a future small terrarium for them. Do you know any small plants that ca...

Re: Colony not increasing in numbers

For the first colony the eggs are probably developing slowly because you have not been giving them enough proteins. For the second colony perhaps they are not increasing in numbers because these coconut ants only get that big, but I would not know because I do not know anything about coconut ants. ...

Re: Found this queen in WA, Aus! PLEASE IDENTIFY!!!

I'm also from WA Australia. Wow, how are you still finding queens? I've been looking, but I have only seen about 2 or 3 in this autumn, and they were all Lasius Niger (except for one crematogaster queen). Do you know when Crematogasters are having nuptial flights? I have Crematogaster Cerasi (black)...

Re: The Total Ant Guide!

test tube water Also, for very very beginning antkeepers, be careful that when you put the cotton over the water in the test tube, that you push it enough so that the water soaks up to the front of the cotton ball (don't push it too far in and have water seep in to where the queen will be either). I...
