Re: Ants and Permaculture Around the Yard and Garden

Not sure how said blackies would fair against carpenters, if you could identify them we could establish a better idea of who'd win. Digging the nest up would be incredibly disruptive to the colony and the queen/s could get killed in the process. You'd need to secure queens first but even then the st...

Re: Own Ytong nest

The ytong will wick up the moisture to a degree (and there is a lot of ytong) and at the moment it is free to evaporate into the ambient air.
Get the acrylic covers on and it will retain more moisture.

Some people carve a "toe" into the underside and sit the toe in a tray of water.

Re: tube transitions. You can use a cotton wool bud, stretch it thin, wrap it around the end and insert. If it doesn't fit just tear a bit off and try again. You can also roll the que tip to help pick the eggs up. I made the mistake of putting my first queen into a test tube with honey water. She wo...

Re: metarhizium anisopliae or why your ants maybe dying.

No prob Bob! I noticed few posts here and there about colonies dying out for no apparent reason. The main response seems to be "it just happens", or "there are many reasons why it could happen". Rather than posting "bruh, muh antz r dyin' please halp!", I wanted to do some leg work so I can shed som...

Re: Dead Pheidole workers everyday

Hello Araldo. Try a slice of lemon in the outworld. Apparently it helps them fight off pathogens and fungi. Something else to consider is diet. Research has shown ants on a high protein, low sugar diet are very unhealthy and can die from the imbalance. Access to a microscope can also help you work o...

Re: Ytong nest hydration

Do the chambers in the nest start at a height of less than 25mm? If yes then more than likely the water is evaporating into the chambers so doing its job. Oh really. Thats great, thank you :D Antnest8 - I do not. But I plumbed in a couple of water lines into the back so I can hydrate from the top a...

metarhizium anisopliae or why your ants maybe dying.

I'd like to talk a little about the pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae . This fungus is found in soil all over the world and causes disease in insects by acting as a parasitoid. It is also known as green mascardine disease due to its green spores. It is easily transmitted from insect to insect...
