Keeping Formica rufa

Hi, Does any one keep these and have any suggestions. I know in the wild they can build quite large nests and be quite active, so was wondering the possibility of keeping them inside enclosed. And when is the best time to collect a queen? Not planning this year but maybe a colony to start next year....

Re: Can a queen restart a colony

Well she nested up and just seen a worker running about, she has water, sugar and protein so will leave her for 2 or 3 days before i check again. The worker must have been very close to emerging. She and the worker have also built up some of the fiber so she seems to be settling in OK. finger crosse...

Re: Can a queen restart a colony

I will keep her going then. I know some queens need workers to feed and survive. So will be interested to see if she recover's. Se does have a tiny amount for larva but don't know if these are viable. Mould and moisture during hibernation killed of the rest of the colony. Now in a clean set up with ...

Re: Ants won't eat protein

Ants generally know how to balance the food sources, and it's surprising how little protein a small colony needs. Just consider a mealworm is the size of several ants, and as others have said protein is only require for growth so the protein from a single worm would be plenty for the growth of 10+ a...

Re: I'm doing a high school project and need help

Maybe if you want someone to reply then give some details about why you want to interview them, how long it might take of their time, maybe a brief intro in to your project etc.

If people see you have put effort in and are keen, then they are more likely to provide some of their time to help.

Re: Is peach syrup from the fruit cups a good sugar source?

Depends what ants, but assuming it not ones with special diets then ants can digest and use more protein and carb sources. So as long as it does not kill them (due to pesticides or poisons) then it will be fine for them.

Re: Question about the hybrid nest

Plus it would be a lot cheaper to just buy a bit of amazon and fit it yourself. its always useful to have some about if you are thinking of keeping ants.

Re: 3D printed?

Not sure why people are talking about "toner" 3D printers don't use toner they use liquid resin or Plastic filiment. To give you an idea of resolution a current "entry level" 3d Resin printer will have aa minimum of a 2K screen resolution which means it can print a 0.05mm resolution. so in theory yo...
