Re: Camp. Pennsylvanicus - Rapid Growth & Need Advice!

Definitely not looking to make my own for this species at least. Maybe for my L. Brevicornis at some point.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Camp. Pennsylvanicus - Rapid Growth & Need Advice!

Hi AC Friends!!! My Camponotus colony is growing rapidly coming out of hibernation. They are approx. 450 workers strong, with 200 pupae, 100 developing larvae, and a large clutch of 200 or so more eggs. As exciting as this is I fear they need some more room! Currently they reside in an AC Hybrid and...

Re: Camponotus Pennsylanicus - Y3 Growth Question

Thanks for the reply! It sounds like the current setup will really comfortably hold them for another year then :-) I might just get an additional outworld for them. I like the idea of them having some more space to explore and travel. Any suggestions on sugars? I've tried several different kinds of ...

Camponotus Pennsylanicus - Y3 Growth Question

Hello! I "inherited" this colony after they moved into a potted plant inside my house (bizarre I know lol). Based on the size of the colony I guessed this was their second year (about 100 workers). After the collection, move into a formicarium, and the shock of that to their growth, they ended last ...

Ant ID Request - Lasius Neoniger?

Found today 08/24/2020 @5:00pm in Albany NY. It's about 85F, rained yesterday, and timing seems consistent for the species. If anyone can confirm it would be incredibly helpful. If it IS, I've found all three species I was hoping to this year :-)

Thanks All!

Re: Camponotus Pennsylvanicus - Seasonal Diet? Growth Patterns?

I really appreciate the input. As a follow up question: I expect I'll need to hibernate them in about 2mo. living in Upstate NY (which I'll tackle the how in the coming weeks). Will this mega clutch of larva cocoon before hibernation? Or would they wait to until they become active again in the sprin...

Camponotus Pennsylvanicus - Seasonal Diet? Growth Patterns?

Hello! I'll start with a little background to frame my questions :D I live in Albany, NY and earlier this summer a Camponotus Penn. colony moved into a houseplant of mine. I was able to remove safely the queen, brood, and most of the workers and decided to keep them. This is a DREAM of mine so I wa...

Queen ID Request - Solenopsis Molesta?

Hello! I located this tiny creature today and I'm hoping you can help me confirm what I have. I found her today 08/09/2020 at around 3:00 PM in Upstate NY. She was wandering around the pavement so I decided to scoop her up to get a closer look. After I caught her I did notice she was about a foot aw...

Re: Moving Brood to Tubing

I will have to figure out how to post pictures here so I can share. I'm estimating we are now up to 100 workers, 200 cocooned workers, and maybe 200 larva or so. All of those are conservative estimates. When they are in the nest they are only occupying the first 25% of the nest on the dry side. Each...

Re: Moving Brood to Tubing

Hate to *bump* a post, but I am still looking for guidance with this update: The media (a small amount of soil) that I have in the nest is almost dry now. The ants are still moving/keeping brood in the tubing outside of the nest. I'm not entirely complaining as it's been fun to watch more of what th...
