Re: Accidental owner of fire ants on my potted orange tree

Agree with the above response. The reason fire ants are such a problem is because they're fast breeders. You may not see many outside the pot now, but...

Re: Daughter is hooked on AC vids.... overwhelmed

Thank you for the resources. I would certainly like to catch ants it sounds fun, but I made a promise to my kiddo we would get one next month, so I cant wait till may  The problem with getting carpenters now is they'll likely be hibernating. Unless you're keeping them in your fridge, it's not ...

Re: Hybrid Nest Or Omni Nest?

Hybrid is matched more to the type of ant. For small species, the omni nest can prove troublesome because of the way it's held together. I can see some small species of ants getting out if it gets bumped or knocked over, which can certainly happen. For my money, I would only use the omni nest for ca...

Re: Ant Sugar Water

Have you tried hummingbird nectar? DO NOT USE THE RED KIND as it's poisonous to hummingbirds and will probably harm ants, too. Just read the package instructions. Of course, the cheaper option is to simply use table sugar. I use a 1 to 4 part dilution. Seems to work well. I know I read that somewher...

Re: Limestone for formicarium?

Not familiar with that stone, but something to consider. An ant nest needs to be hydrated. While you could probably carve out a lovely nest from that, is it porous enough that it can offer water to ants? In other words, if you poured water on one part of it, would the water sink in and spread to the...

Re: New Home, new setup!

That is a queen alate, but I'm a bit confused by what you posted. You said you went out and found ants, are these just random ants you happened to catch? If that's the case, sorry to say that queen alate was just out for a stroll and is likely not fertilized. The best way to start a colony is to cap...

Re: New Keeper, Ant Vivarium Setup Questions

I would hesitate in using any sort of stain, to be honest. C. Novae are probably the most common type of ant in my area, and they nest exclusively in untreated wood. If that's just because it's easier for them to dig out or if the stain is poisonous to them, I don't know, but they don't even touch t...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

I have a couple of C. Penns and will hopefully add another C. Novae once spring nuptual flights come along. So I plan on having three separate, different set-ups. So far, all the Spousal Unit has said is that if they escape into the house I'm in serious trouble. Not worried! As to your ants, I have ...
