Re: Freezing insects to kill parasites?

Unfortunately, freezing generally slows down bacterial growth, it doesn't stop it. Otherwise we'd never get sick in winter (excepting viruses) and as a health care worker, I can attest this is not the case. This is why food can still go bad even in the freezer. Parasites, I can't speak for. Freezing...

Re: Protein for Camponotus ants

I have one colony that will eat damned near anything, and another that is so stupidly picky that they'll only eat this liquid goop I can't identify that I got off the internet. My advice is try different foods and see what they like. Egg whites have been recommended several times, but I would highly...

Re: Sleepytime?

Looking like they're out, so in the fridge they went.

Now we just have to wait for the spousal unit to find them... ;)

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Most say you can't go wrong with crickets, like a leg. In my case, my spoiled brats wouldn't even take a freshly-killed cricket. Someone suggested egg whites, that seemed to work. General consensus is DON'T try any sort of dairy protein because they can't digest it. I had some luck with fish flakes,...

Re: Sleepytime?

He ate them. I found a head and one larva. Little $*@&! That's what I get for encouraging them to chase bugs in the house that fly in from outside. I have no interest in keeping ants that wouldn't do well in this environment. Besides, if anything goes wrong, I want them to at least have a chance sur...

Re: Werid Queen behaviour!!

That, unfortunately, is exactly what happened to one of my early colonies. It seemed as though she left her young and went off to die. The other ants lived a couple of days longer before dying themselves. Wish I had better news.

Re: Omni vs. Hybrid

Agree with above. To add to the discussion my two cents, I have found that the openings on the Omni nests are EXTREMELY small, so small that I could not even fit the tiny bit of tubing that came with the nests into them even after heating. I had to basically glue it on with silicone. So I'm not goin...

Re: Picky eaters

I'll try that. Weirdly enough, I fed them some slimy goop I got with some other ant stuff, and they took to it like bees to honey. Go figure. Worse then kids, they are.
