I have since moved the colony into a tubs and tubes setup and they appear much happier,
They even moved some cotton back in, to make the entrance smaller.

I use Vaseline for my lasius colony
The only problem is that they tend to escape within a few hours.
But after a few days, the ants stop trying to escape,

You should try to keep local ants first Dracula ants are very hard to keep Also non native ants are not going to do well unless they are invasive But keeping invasive species is very dangerous and problematic to the environment There should be some cool ants in California. The brood might go into hibernation
My lasius ants brood did not develop at all until the temperature warmed up
Now they have pupa
