100% hot glue ant nest?
Recently, as my two ant colonies start to grow bigger, I've been thinking about different ways to make ant nests. I have made a plaster one, but I know that plaster molds easily, and in the UK there is no ytong/AAC/aircrete (though I am going to be getting some firebrick to try and work with that.)....

Anyone had success with controlled aphid farming?
Hello, antkeepers. Recently I've had the idea to introduce a sustainable population of aphids into my lasius niger colony's outworld, when I finish making them one. In the UK we have loads of aphids pretty much everywhere, and a few chilli plants of mine are currently teeming with the buggers. The p...

Re: How do I know if eggs are still viable?
I found a lasius niger queen on the 2nd August and she laid some eggs which still haven't hatched, the water has run out and I don't know what to do. I've tried attaching another tube but she doesn't want to move. She is still standing over her eggs but shouldn't they have hatched by now? I found h...

Re: Attachment to feeder insects?
I've never thought of it that way. One quick death of an incredibly basic creature for a future for thousands. It really helps, thanks

Re: Synthetic Diet - Questions
Welcome to the wonderful world of ants :D, L Niger is a great beginner species, very hardy, and they make babies very quickly. For a various amount of reasons, I do not think it will be possible for me to feed my ant with live insects. I understand Lasius Niger needs both proteins and carbohydrates....

Re: Should I feed my new queen?
Definitely!! The workers need energy to forage, dig and work and the larva and queen need protein to grow and lay. Claustral specie queens don't need to be fed protein before their first batch of eggs, but then she would run out of wing muscles before long. It's possible the worker you saw died due ...

Attachment to feeder insects?
For a bit of backstory, I've always been very empathetic to the point of stupidity. Stuff like saving fruitflies that land in the sink in summer and tiny spider and moths that get stuck inside. Recently, I've brought a pack of feeder mealworms with the intention to feed them to my budding ant colony...

Re: Hibernating queen with brood?
Most of my test tubes were too small and could only hold smaller amounts of water. This created problems for keeping over long periods, always running low on water. It's best to have a bunch of AC test tubes on hand they are better for long term use. I got test tubes from the **** and they are too ...

Hibernating queen with brood?
I have a L Niger queen and shes been taking well enough care of her brood, and the workers have been taking honey and feeding her with it. Now it's getting fairly cold in the UK and I believe they should be starting hibernation, but should I be waiting for the brood she has to grow and hatch and pup...

Re: Best insect for feeding L. Niger??
Hey there! You can probably feed them anything you like, as long as you take a hard exoskeleton into account (pre-cut) and the speed at which the food decays (like the worms.) I'd say it's a bit of trial and error to find out what your colony likes. As to how often, that depends on the size of your...
