Hi. ArizonanAnts here... I caught a small black queen back in October. She layed eggs and to my surprise, they formed into cocoons! What I read on the ant wiki says that C. penn. are monogynous meaning the colonies have one queen. It is possible that they are fighting because of this. I hope this helps

It all depends on the ant. I know some queens take a long time for their brood to develop. Also, the climate could affect development. Does she have eggs? If she does, don't worry.
