Yes, they have a regular ant diet.
Takes 1 month, their pupae don't have cocoons so if yours does it's probably something else so keep this in mind.

You can bring them back to your house as long as they are still in the same state or province.

Just a regular test tube setup, they are fully-claustral.

Upon further investigation it seems there was some sort of white mold which spread on the glass of the tt and possibly could be the reason of their death. Can't quite tell but she could be Liometopum occidentale, for a confermation you can look at the brood, L. occidentale are known for raising a large number of nanitics, if yours don't it's likely they're Formica. The workers also have orange thoraxes.

She looks like Solenopsis to me, the fire ant kind of Solenopsis.
