Re: Very small new generation of Crematogaster Scutellaris : why?
Crematogester S; are very touching in general, because in addition to their natural cuteness they do show some individualistic behaviour, you really feel they are all very different in personality, depending their personal history and natural character. More than many other species indeed. But still...

Re: Very small new generation of Crematogaster Scutellaris : why?
And it's a pain after when I read my post to have some horribly wrong spellings like "right know" instead of right now... I got used to longer time to make some editing... I'm aware it is used by some to hide their crimes or destroy interesting discussions so it's OK this way. No other ideas about w...

Re: Very small new generation of Crematogaster Scutellaris : why?
"off the top of my head" ==> first time I meet this idiomatic formulation. I like this It would be "au pied levé" in french. "Là comme ça au pied levé" is the expression most often for us. Don't ask me why : it's far from obvious to me, but well in use.

Re: Very small new generation of Crematogaster Scutellaris : why?
Again I don't see it as a problem just very interesting. Yes indeed, and I would like to know in order to be able to reproduce it at will in the future if possible without hurting the girls. My favourite theory right know is the lack of protein. Not that there was not enough in the harvest area, bu...

Re: Very small new generation of Crematogaster Scutellaris : why?
Indeed LasiusSapien , that's why I did open the question about the fungus (mold I called it as in the case of my Crematogaster, they do strangely keep seed of "mold" (or call it fungus) but they don't cultivate it at home but on rotting fruits around. It took time before I understood what they were ...

Re: Very small new generation of Crematogaster Scutellaris : why?
Those are called nanitics (first generation of workers) It would be nice to read the question before giving some random answer... It's NOT a first generation, the colony is already a few years old. And I specified oin the very first line that these ants are much smaller than the nanitics of the fir...

Re: Very small new generation of Crematogaster Scutellaris : why?
Depends on the amount of protein the workers feed the larvae. So maybe increasing their protein intake will increase the general size of workers. But generally an ant colony would have slightly smaller workers even if that species isn't polymorphic. The smaller workers tend to stay in nest and look...

Re: Messor Barbarus?
On Crematogaster Scutellaris, the heart shape abdomen is only seen on smaller minor ants I think. Bigger ants do have the same shape in fact but this will disappear a.s.a. it's social stomach (at least that's my guest, you can see it with microscope when it's full it's transparent in the abdomen) is...

Re: Can Crematogaster Scutellaris handle 8 degrees c?
Usually it's OK but there are some risks, because in the wild on cold weather they can adapt their nest, while in captivity, they may not have satisfactory options to protect themselves against cold (particularly if they have a huge empty nest with no small room or "corner" to gather to) and anyway,...
