Not sure how to post pictures in here, have never tried. But you could always just upload them somewhere and post links. But yeah, without seeing pictures, it's hard to say what it is. From your description, it kinda sounds like it could be some type of Formica, but hard to say what kind. What color...

Hey there fellow Colorado Ant nerds, hope you found many queens so far this year. Been finding a few pogonomyrmex occidentalis queens out here on the western slope, so keep an eye out if you are looking for one.
