My first nanitics
My first ant queen has just formed her first nanitics. They seem really busy running around, and the queen is still hanging out with the eggs.
*Edit*
I am cheering because it has taken about 2 months and I was starting to get concerned.

Re: New Zealand nuptial flights
Is this a male alate? (Image may be a wasp) Omg, I have not seen any queens yet. Sounds like nz is starting early. Where are you? Can I call you tonight after work?
None of my local wild colonies are swarming so I doubt my area is properly nuptial yet.

Re: New Zealand, Major or Queen?
I found a large one out at the small colony this morning. Oh my, could we have an Austroprenera colony nearby coming out of hibernation. I had never even imagined that. I tried to follow it back home but the area it moved to has a huge covering of leaf litter so I lost him. Varying Austroprenera hav...

Re: New Zealand, Major or Queen?
Very interesting. There has been an Austroponera trapped 400 meters away from my place so that would be super cool. My home is in Wellington city next to the Zealandia reserve, which is further south than the supposed impressa occupied space. It is, however, interesting that these ants are pretty ac...

New Zealand, Major or Queen?
I found this exceptionally large ant near one of the smaller wild colonies on my property. I almost thought this particular colony died out during the winter but it seems to be still alive now we are warming up. We believe the nuptial flight will occur around November 25th so this sighting has me re...

Re: New Zealand nuptial flights
I have been trapping local ants and watching their progress over the winter season in Wellington city. Unfortunately, two of my nearby colonies seem to have disappeared, including one which I saw fighting with another in early spring. I am hoping to see winged alates popping up to the surface for a ...

Re: Nuptial Flight Hotspots in Auckland, New Zealand.
Hi, I have been trapping here in Wellington and have yet to find anything. From my search of academic record from the vic uni database there isnt any public information on local nuptial flight. I imagine the academic community are worried about people disturbing fragile native colonies during such a...

Fighting ants
Hi everyone, I just went to visit a wild colony of Monomorium antarcticum in my yard and found two of the ants fighting. I am guessing the other ant must be from another colony and with the lack of food given the current cool season. One ant engaged the others mesosoma, while the engaged one curled ...

Hi, I have recently taken up an interest in ant keeping. While it is currently winter here in Wellington, New Zealand, my traps have found a few species of ant in my area. The most common species is Chelaner antarcticum. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/28423444 My information suggests that ...
