Re: Disorientation from Heat?
Something similar happened to my Camponotus Modoc Queen. She was one of the first three queen ants I caught. It only took a few minutes of sunlight accidentally shining on her test tube on a hot day. She threw up, then flopped on her back and did the curled up thing a bunch of bugs and arachnids do ...

When should I hibernate my ants?
So I can't seem to figure out when to hibernate my ants, I intend to put them in the fridge when I do so, so the temperature stays consistent and safe. I read somewhere the larva stop growing when they're getting ready for hibernation? I think this has happened with one of my colonies, but it's stil...

Two deaths and a fake death
So I'm still fairly new to ant keeping, but so far I have caught seven ant queens two have recently been producing workers! But I've lost two along the way so far. Stubby actually survived much longer than I thought she would. She had three legs, only these legs were only one segment long. Hence the...

Question about building materials! (Also a question about feeding)
So, I know some ants are sensitive to various chemicals. But I won't be able to buy a fancy setup for my two small but growing colonies. (One tetramorium caespitum, the other camponotus modoc) I very much want to make really fancy and pretty setups, that will likely end up being as much art as they ...

Re: Help!!! Queens with parasitic fungus!
I'm afraid I'd cleaned the test tube out before I saw your post. Even then I'm not sure I wanted to risk putting infected eggs with potentially unaffected queens (if the lemon juice didn't work). Especially since I'm fairly sure the eggs weren't fertile based on the now dead queen's behavior (maybe ...

Re: Help!!! Queens with parasitic fungus!
Not quite, I did my best to take pictures, sorry they aren't great. I did get a video, but I no longer remember how to cut audio out of that, so until I figure that out I won't post the video unless I have to! But since the ant is dead, I figured pictures would be just fine. Pictures: https://drive....

Help!!! Queens with parasitic fungus!
So recently I caught three queens, they have all just started laying eggs. One from the start was fairly agitated and didn't take care of her eggs. At first I assumed she just probably wasn't fertilized. She grew more and more irritable and somewhat sickly, I figured she wasn't gonna make it. Then t...

Re: I need feedback on my design and plans!
Wow! That's a pretty impressive plan! My concerns with it though might be nuptial flights or too much water for the ants. Most camponotus ants from what I understand prefer fairly dry ares. Although the nuptial flights might not be an issue if they decide conditions aren't right. AS FOR THE FIGHTING...

Re: Queens found in Utah on June 13th
Thanks! I suspected they might be camponotus of some sort! I was kind of hoping for an exact species identification rather than just the family, but it sounds like that isn't easy to do with a lot of camponotus ants. They've all started laying eggs! But I'm thinking maybe only Gold is fertile based ...
