Re: Lasius niger living in a different continent (hibernation)

Valid point. I am inclined to see how they behave in October to make a decision, if I see they slow down, I hibernate them, otherwise, I will wait until March for their brake. I will post messages to let everyone know what happened so that if anyone comes across a similar issue in the future there (...

Lasius niger living in a different continent (hibernation)

Hello, As I am new to ant keeping I rather ask the question than test it by myself and kill a small colony. I bought some lasius niger ants in the UK and brought them to south america where the seasons are the opposite. Although the queens arrived in our winter, our house is heated and have had a me...

Re: Lasius niger and time to move them from their test tube

If you look carefully at the picture you will notice there is a layer of water at the bottom (can be topped up via a small hole on the side), approximately 2cm in height, that does not touch the plaster but keeps the formicarium humid (measured 70% humidity). I am hoping it will suit the lasius and ...

Lasius niger and time to move them from their test tube

Hi everyone, (1) I have a colony almost ready for relocation (we are up to 30 workers and lots of brood, etc) and would like to know if the lasius niger takes well to a homemade plaster formicarium (see photo attached). My idea is to keep them there for some time and then move them to a larger "Ants...

They certainly behave as crazy ants. Most of them seem to hibernate so we will have to wait until October when our spring starts. I am also waiting for my macro lens to take better pictures. I will post them then.

Re: Is it a queen and what kind of ant is it? - La Paz - Bolivia

Hi, Here are some more photos. These ants (2mm?) are tiny and would appear to be hibernating. I caught them in La Paz (high altitude) so our climate is not tropical (2C-25C range during the year day/night. https://i.imgur.com/WfERSz0.jpg https://i.imgur.com/6Flzpbk.jpg Couldn't find the queen this m...

Is it a queen and what kind of ant is it? - La Paz - Bolivia

Hello, Whilst going through an empty lot we came across an ants nest and managed to capture a big chunk of the ants including what we believe, is a queen. We have now relocated the nest to a new set up made with plaster and although it is winter over here, they seem to have settled well although pre...

Re: Ant Feeding (test tube 10+ workers)

Out of interest, we often buy fresh meat from the super market that will always contain a certain amount of "juice" (blood) and I was wondering if the "juice" can be fed to the ants as protein given their inability to cut through meat and prefer the juices from the live animals as a source of protei...

Re: Ant Feeding (test tube 10+ workers)

Thank you all for the replies. I have now feed them a little honey and in one of the test tubes, a fly a caught, which they seem to appreciate. I think the delivery trip has stressed them somewhat so I am going to leave them alone for a week or so to see if they like where I have located them (in a ...
