I'ts normal for Messor species to do that, It are left overs they can't digest, since they chew open seeds, they always have 1 room where they "poop" be sure to clean it out some times or cycle nests.. It's a growing ground for bacteria.

I have had some problem man, (I feel you) My queen had 3 workers and a bit of brood, then I moved them into a natural setup but it got too dry and my brood died, After that I decided to move them into a wood setup but the workers escaped and never came back, Then I put her into a testube in a closet...

Tetramorium I would say is a good species, they aren't that small, if you want to see small then go look at Brachymyrmex workers or Carebara diversa minors, they grow really fast, they have always a big amount of brood (if you feed them good) and are easy to keep overal, Lasius is also a good specie...

The 4th one, I think is Brachymyrmex, but.. it could also be Tapinoma or technomyrmex but I doubt it, it's upto you to take a look and guess what it is, since the photo's aren't the best quality. Goodluck
