Central Texas - late March
We had some rains and then a hot day, and oila! Flying ants! It's like magic...] I saw one right outside my window so I went out and grabbed what I thought were 2 different queens at first, but after a little bit of thought, I realized I probably grabbed a male and female from the same flight. Proba...

Re: Megabob's Monomorium Minimum Journal
Okay, an update on the new habitat. The ants did not take to it immediately like a kid to the tree on Christmas like I had hoped. That's not a big deal, but I wanted them to move out of that moldy test tube so I devised a plan: https://i.imgur.com/be1Zblg.jpg Previously I had tried to get them to mo...

Re: My crematogaster queen has eggs!
Cool looking queen! I hope she flourishes. I started trying to keep ants last spring. I think my main mistakes were 1. not feeding the queen. My only successful colony is a colony of small black ants. They started doing a lot better when I fed them sugar/sugar water. Although, your genus seems to be...

Re: Ausants ants journal
Hey Ausants, sounds like things are progressing great for you! Can you add some pictures of the setup or describe it a little more? Also, what have you been feeding the ants? Honey and fish food the whole time?

Re: Megabob's Monomorium Minimum Journal
Ok, another update: a Christmas present for my ants :D I originally bought the "All you need solenopsis hybrid" kit from AntsCanada. I have no regrets about this, I love AntsCanada and am happy to support them, but I realize now that it was a little overzealous for my tiny black ants. So the other d...

Re: Megabob's Monomorium Minimum Journal
Ok, so it has been a while, but here is what happened to this colony: Soon after my last post, they started dwindling in numbers. They got down to 4 workers and 2 queens with a decent number of eggs. I started feeding them more sugar and gave them time to themselves. At this point, I basically expec...

Re: Megabob's Monomorium Minimum Journal
Thanks Joe! They're still not moving to the clean tube so I'm glad to know that a little mold is OK.

Megabob's Monomorium Minimum Journal
I captured some small black ants in mid April 2019 in central Texas. Currently, I think they are Monomorium minimum , but I'm not sure. Here is the identification thread: https://forum.AntsCanada.com/viewtopic.php?p=57930#p57930 I captured them while they were migrating nests. I got 4 queens and 20+...

Re: Central Texas -- Early May
Thanks. Kind of a bummer, I'm scared to keep fire ants...
