Crematogasters finally laying eggs!

Hey everyone, it's been a long winter hibernation. With my colonies waking up, I'm back (mostly because now I have stuff to talk about again). Last August I was lucky enough to catch 8 Crematogaster queens, but I was really nervous about their viability because not a single one laid any eggs. I coul...

Re: why do you think my crematogaster queens aren't laying eggs

So fun fact, I also got lucky this August and caught 8 crematogaster queens. It’s been about 2 weeks since and, coincidentally, none of mine are laying eggs either. I’m starting to think this isn’t a random fluke and it’s the species itself. No new info on why this is happening but I’m in the same b...

Re: Colony Gone Wrong

Here's the issue, There are actually more ants than when I started and am afraid that if I don't do something soon I'll be in trouble. I don't want to get rid of everything, what should I do? Please, I'm free for any feedback and any other questions. I’m wondering if you originally thought the popu...

The person who started the thread does have fire ants. Things got messed up is all. If you have another question about your own ants, I’d start a new thread instead.

Where are these ants from and what time of year did you collect the queen?

Re: WHY IS MY QUEEN NOT LAYING EGGS? ITS A QUEEN FOR SURE

I caugh 2 lasius niger queens 2 months ago, 1 has laid eggs and has around 15 workers now. The other didn't lay eggs. What to do with the quees that didn't lay eggs? Either wait it out and see if they do lay eggs eventually, some queens take a while to feel comfortable enough to do so, or release t...

Re: why do you think my crematogaster queens aren't laying eggs

The once per week rule is great, that’s what I follow. For the differences between the queens, I can only think those species are more comfortable in the test tube space than the crematogasters, but I can’t think of a reason why. Both crematogaster and lasius nest in similar areas, so if the lasius ...

Re: why do you think my crematogaster queens aren't laying eggs

Ant queens can take anywhere from a few days to even a few months to lay eggs. The more comfortable they are, the better. How often do you check in on them and take them out of their dark storage space?

Re: Mold!

I also have a mold problem in my terrarium where mold is growing all around inside it. Any tips to get rid of it. Is there a lid on your terrarium? If there’s no air circulation to naturally dry things out then mold will happen. Take out whatever mold you can and let the whole thing air out a bit, ...

Re: About protein sources

I have made a terrarium for my ants and when I feed them meal worms they do not take it out of their nests to a designated waste site, what does this mean. It means they aren’t done with it yet. If they don’t want it in their nest anymore they will take it out, but until such a time they don’t cons...
