Thanks for that. I thought I might just be making the whole process more complex by adding the outside environment to the mix. I guess I will rethink my strategy and find a way to make it work indoors.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering whether the ants would need some soil to burrow into to help them cope with the temperature swings and give them some insulation. Perhaps an acrylic formicarium or one without soil would not give them that option.

I live in Ontario, near Toronto. I was wondering if I could raise a Camponotus ant colony in a proper formicarium outdoors. I would have to protect it from the rain and pests, and bring the colony into an unheated garage in the winter. Would this work?
