Re: ARK-LA-TN-MS-AL-GA-SC-NC nuptial flights

A number carpenter ant queens can be orange. But I think the more common orange Camponotus queens in Georgia are the C. castaneus! I have a colony of these and like them quite a bit. Edit: Here in Georgia, we also have a large number of Formica genus queens that can be orange, as well. Those girls c...

Re: Got Ants and Questions (beginner)

The insects shouldn't be dried. They need to be juicy (a little gross, I know)! And it is easier on the ants if the honey is mixed with water. I would say take a bottle cap and put one drop of water and one drop of honey in it (roughly 1:1 ratio) and stir it with a toothpick. Then get one drop of th...

Re: Got Ants and Questions (beginner)

Super exciting and addictive! I am only a month in and I still have sleepless nights because my brain won’t shut down due to ant-thoughts. The hardest part for newbies like me and you is (from what I gather on here and in formiculture.com) patience!! Do you know if your queen has been fed? It may be...

Re: When are the Ant Towers coming out?

I am by no means an experienced keeper, just a general bug nerd. However, I caught a carpenter ant queen and her two nanitics coming out of diapause this weekend (found them in a rotting log). Camponotus novaeboracensis, I am pretty positive (black heads, red alitrunks, and black gasters). From what...

Brachymyrmex

I have a small wild-caught colony of Brachymyrmex. They are not our native B. delpilis, but some other, totally black species (patagonicus?). When I caught them I managed to get the queen, around 30-40 workers, and probably 100 or more eggs/larvae...all in a cork-top four ounce muth jar. I connected...

How long does the fluon application last and is there a reason for going with the “ByFormica” brand as opposed to some generic fluon product?

Re: Interesting find!

In my reading I read some mentioning that these needle ants were found and identified in southeastern United States sometime in the ‘30s...are they STILL considered invasive? Shouldn’t they now be considered “naturalized”? Another question, does anyone have any experience keeping these? I only grabb...

Re: Interesting find!

I don’t know remember what neuronal pathway finally led me to stumble across into a specific ID, but when comparing the dorsal mesasomal pictures to what I saw in the microscope, then doing a mandibular tooth count, and that uniquely-shoe-toe petiolar node...I was in love...I mean there was no mista...
