130 days no workers
I caught two queen ants back during the end of june, this means they've been just chilling for 130 days-ish in a couple tupperware containers in the dark with food water and honey. They still seem livley, but I am wondering when might want to have their first workers. Could it be that when I caught ...

Re: Is my semi-claustral setup good?
You should cover the test tube so it’s dark. Their definitely not going to be comfortable laying eggs out in the light like that. Yeah, not sure why I haven't done this yet. I think because they live out in their little burrows and expirence a day night cycle out there so why not here. If they seal...

Is my semi-claustral setup good?
So I caught two queens from which I suspect to be semi-claustral, I created a setup based on a couple videos I've seen. Do you think these setups should work for semi- claustral or evwn fully claustral. Well actually I now remember that the AntsCanada dictionary says that semi queens cover their ent...

Hmm don't think so, Tapinoma Sessile is a house ant, yet I found these two enjoying the leaf litter and dirt. I did find them within 3 meters of each other, on separate nights.

Suspected semi-claustral queen?
So I found this girl when I was checking up on a big headed nest that I've been watching for a month or so. I had not checked in a while so I went and found no big-headed ants, but I saw a black and in a very shallow hole, maybe 2cm diameter entrance and 5cm deep. So I come back the next day (today)...

Capturing queens at the nest entrance
If I were to capture a big headed (pheidole I think) drone and queen at the nest entrance and put them both in a test tube, would they mate? would this be a bad idea (interbreeding, although I've read some ants do this)? would they ignore eachother? if a colony was started, would they have problems ...

Re: My queen has died after 3 months
First what species was it and are you sure it’s even dead? Sometimes ants just sit there curled up and look like their dead and when you poke them with a toothpick they get up and run. Obviously laying on her back is usually not a good sign. But is it possible the test tube flooded a bit? She could...
