If the Lasius workers were dragging the parasitic queens into the nest than this is exactly what the queen wanted. What species is this ant I found? Reason I'm asking is I like the way they go about in the garden, their shape and is it a good species of interest to keep or not and any tips. Looks like parasitic Lasius. Yes, thanks. After going and handling a few more of them from the same spot my fingers had a strong smell of citronella. Being parasitic, they probably won't do anything in the test tube will they? I took a few others I found (from the same spot) and put them in my viva...

But even if you catch a mated Queen you will need some type of Lasius host workers. As Claviger is a parasite queen and can’t start their own colony. They infiltrate a Lasius nest and kill the queen.
