Re: Camponotus Barbaricus hibernation experience
I am a newbie too, so i just know what i read in the forums! I read that if they start being less active or if the larvae don't turn into pupae for too long then that is an indication that it is time to hibernate. I only have 5 workers (nurses) and 4-5 larvae, maybe also some hidden eggs. I have no ...

Re: Camponotus Barbaricus hibernation experience
I am a total newbie here but my first queen (i caught her this summer) is also a camponotus barbaricus. I'm also trying to read all about this species, I've read people saying they can go without hibernation, others claiming they need 4 months at 5ºC. What i can tell you is this, the species exist i...

Re: Help Identifying Queen Ant 15th October Portugal
Yes I guess that regarding care it doesn't really matter what Messor species it is cause they all behave in a similar way and have similar diet, however I really want to know because I'm very curious about it. I've been digging for information and found this spanish website that shows the nuptial fl...

Re: Portugal-Lisbon 15-10, probably male
I was assuming that the ants you saw and the ones I saw could be from the same genus, because they are about the same size (the male ones) and had their nuptial flights in the same day, also near Lisbon, but i guess many different ant species and genus could be flying in the same day. I already post...

Re: Portugal-Lisbon 15-10, probably male
Hello! I also saw those ants in the exact same day in Pero Pinheiro (also on the Lisbon outskirts). I am just a begginer here and I'm not sure at all but I believe they are males of the messor genus, I also saw many queens (not nearly as many as the males) and caught some. Now I have them in test tu...

Re: Ant (Queen+workers) Identification request
Yes, I know. They are still too shy and rarely ever leave the formicarium to the outworld where i could take better photos. I moved them into the formicarium way too soon, and it's too big for them.. but now i don't want to move them back into a test tube. They are funny though, there is usually one...

Re: IDing Camponotus from Formica
Thanks! Posts like this are great for me and others like me who are just starting! Where can I find more information of this kind? I want to start to be able to differentiate between genus. With this post I'm even more convinced that the ants I have are Camponotus. Now I only need to know which spec...

Re: Ant (Queen+workers) Identification request
The workers are aproximatelly 6mm. The queen was found at nightime around 11.00 pm. Don't know if this helps.
Now (1st Oct) I have 5 workers.
