Red tinted water in test tube
I took my ants (Lasius Niger) out of hibernation 3 weeks ago. Their test tube had gotten a bit mouldy over the winter, so I moved them to a fresh one. Since then, they've been eating fine and there's lots of new eggs, but their water has started to turn red and the cotton is starting to go funny qui...

I'll get it a bit warmer and just hope for the best.

Hibernating in the fridge
I don't have anywhere cold in my house, so I put my ants (Lasius Niger) in the fridge to hibernate yesterday. I've put a thermometer in there to check the temperature and it's 3.5°c in there. Re: dry cat food for ant?
Sorry for resurrecting a thread from the past. I fed my ants (lasius niger) a piece of crushed dry cat food last night, and they've carried all the pieces back into their nest and are happily feeding it to the babies. Has anyone had experience feeding ants cat food long term? I have an unlimited sup...

Re: My new Lasius Niger colony
Thanks for the feedback. I've noticed I'm giving them far too much honey, I've just been taking it away and replacing with fresh while I work out how much they eat. I'll give them less. I was a bit concerned that the journey would be hard on the ants ordering them from eBay, but they seem to have ma...

My new Lasius Niger colony
I've recently become interested in ants by watching the AntsCanada YouTube videos, and I've just started keeping a new Lasius Niger colony. I ordered my queen off eBay, because I've missed nuptial flights and didn't want to wait until next year. The colony is up to about 20-25 workers now. I have a ...
