Hey guys,
I live in a pretty remote area and nuptial flight season is starting, I am unsure of where to look for them in terms of landscape, any ideas?

Re: Is this unusual? Are they fertile?
I would think it means they are probably not fertalized yet, but I would keep them around just in case. I suggest putting them in a dark area for a week or so without checking on them so they calm down.

Re: Is this unusual? Are they fertile?
That totally depends on what season that you caught her in, the first queen that I caught took a few weeks to start laying her eggs, and I caught her in the middle of summer. The length also depends on temperature and type of ant, if it is winter where you live it is likely that she won't lay until ...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!
I have recently found a Camponotus nest outside my house and I decided to look for a possible queen. I found 7 ants that appeared to be queens, which sounds weird, but I am positive that they were (none of them had wings anymore, and they had scars). I put 3 of the queens into a double test tube set...

Re: Is this unusual? Are they fertile?
My son and I also have found numerous Campanotus queens around our property, the ones with wings have not yet mated and therefore are unable to produce offspring. However, after the queens have mated, they will chew their wings off and start their own nests. So the one that was removing its wing is ...

Re: Carpenter Ant nest transfer
Thanks! So, we found red carpenter ant drones. Will they mate? or do they need to be of the same species? Also, in the red carpenter ant nest we found 6 wingless queens (large size, large thorax, scars on thorax) as well as many winged drones. There were only winged drones and one winged queen. Are ...

Re: Carpenter Ant nest transfer
Thanks Lebenet. We have actually captured two queens in the past and put them into test tubes. The first died after producing a few eggs. The second produced a single worker. I built a formicarium for them but they also died before transfer. Very disappointing! We do have new queens and drones in ou...

Carpenter Ant nest transfer
Hello, my son and I just found a carpenter ant nest in hibernation. We collected various types of ants including drones, workers, and new queens (winged). Despite thoroughly looking, we were unable to identify the original queen although we have two small pieces of wood with nesting chambers that we...
