Do Odontomachus need to eat sugary foods all the time?

Hi there, Im raising a queen of odontomachus and another one of ectattoma ants which are semi claustral and I know they are very tricky to care for but I accepted the challenge regardless of the difficulty. The odontomachus has a lot of eggs which she carries with her jaws and i feed her (as well as...

Re: Live feeding vs. dead feeding

Sorry cheeta but I think you missed his point. For what I have read and watched on ants, yes some do prefer to hunt living food. AC's YouTube has a species on ants who's name I forgot but we have called the black panthers who love to hunt to the point they are always hunting the spring tails even w...

My trapjaw (semi clustral) only eats protein
What proteins do you feed your odontomachus with?

Re: Trapjaw Help

I hope this helps. I have an ectatomma ant and it has a lot of similarities to those of the odontomachus when in comes to feeding habits. What I've tried is to keep her in a warm environment, enclosed and with different types of proteins. They are veeerrryy picky with food so if you feed them mealwo...

Re: Changing from test tube to ytong nest

I don't know mate, but to me it looks so overcrowded that it discourages the poor little queen to even take a peek outside the test tube. I would use less materials and just let her go with the flow. One question, is she all by herself of does she have some offspring? Usually when they are lone quee...

Re: Pheidole Sp. Habitat

Man that terrarium looks so cool! Thats what I want to build when my colony has enough brood. I have just received my pheidole praeusta queen (specie from South America where I'm based atm) but so far she has just layed eggs.

Mind if I ask how many workers do you have?

Re: Do queens in their founding stage need oxygen?

Long story short, yes. But because I love biology I excluded way too much info below. You can skip it but it may be cool. They are using oxygen for sure, however (and I say all of this as a seasoned biologist but novice antkeeper) there are a few things to consider: 1) All eukaryotes use oxygen. In...

Re: Adoption of ants

That could be a possibility however I feel like a criminal for abandoning thw old colony. I have tried it already but the workers try to sting thw new queen so I removed her immediately.

Re: Hopes and dreams riding on a single Crematogaster Queen

Crematogaster is the first type of ant I've ever had and I love the fact that they have a heart shaped gaster that they wiggle to communicate stuff to others in the colony.

Re: My First Colony

hey good to see you getting into the hobby. i suggest camponotus as there slow growers are adaptable to cold weather, and easy to care for (plus there poliginus meaning they have multiple shapes and sizes) they also dont get out or attempt to get out as much. i suggest you read hitch3's camponotus ...
