Re: Pennsylvania Ant ID?

Ok, have another one.

Caught in the same area, between 5 and 6 PM. She's jet black and I measured her between 1.5 and 2 cm (she was not cooperative). I'm guessing Camponatus? Also, should I be concerned about her trying to chew her way out of the tube?

Re: No eggs for months.

I’m having the same issue with a Crematogaster alate. Caught her last August and she’s still alive, but no eggs. Sounds like we’re in the same boat here. I’ve reached the point of considering releasing her, because keeping her feels pointless and worrying over her mysterious continued health is just...

Pennsylvania Ant ID?

She's roughly half a centimeter long, caught around 3PM on May 22nd in western Pennsylvania. Any ideas what she is? (She does have wings; it's just hard to see them from this angle.)

Ant Tower Questions

I just got the new Ant Tower in the mail and I love the design. I'm really excited to see it in action, but I have two questions. One, I see it has a sort of notch or trench on the underside of the hydration tray. Is that for use of a heating cable? Two, how recommended is it to use the air circulat...

Re: Raw honey, bad for ants?

Doesn't Mikey recommend raw honey in one of his videos, because the ants are less likely to drown? He does, thats why i used it. But i will never touch the stuff again for my ants. Caused death in multiple colonies, and it was organic. I suppose it could vary quite a bit depending on the source of ...

I personally use the freeze-dried bugs for sale as reptile food (such as Fluker's® Freeze Dried Medley). I just rehydrate the bugs in water, and my Carpenter ants love them. Hope that helps.
How do you rehydrate them? Just dip them in some water, or something more involved?

Re: Hibernating in the fridge

You could also use a small wine cooler. You can get one for not too much money from Amazon, and it might be more convenient.

Re: Heating Cord / Cable

I haven't tried a heating pad, but I did buy this heating cable from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Reptile-Cable-11-5-Feet/dp/B001LQUZAM?keywords=heating+cable&qid=1540756097&sr=8-23&ref=sr_1_23 It's a low power, 15 Watt cable made for reptile enclosures. I set it up with the AC test tube r...

Re: Can ants breathe when locked in a fridge or wine cooler?

It's just eight queens now, still in individual test tube setups. I'm given to understand Crematogaster won't produce any brood until after hibernation, because of how late in the year their nuptial flight is. I'm taking it from what you said this shouldn't be an issue for such a small number, then?
