Re: Question about early colony care

It would have been best to move the queen to a fresh test tube when you took her out of hibernation and noticed that the water was getting low. Moving her while she has eggs is worst case scenario because when you force the queen out they usually never go back for their eggs and moving their eggs by...

Re: Gnat Problem!!! Use BT or Nematodes?

I have a lot of house plants. And this gnat problem is from overwatering soil. These things breed in saturated soil. I tried those nematodes, I didn’t really notice those helping. But if you let the soil dry up the gnats will stop breeding in the soil.

Re: Fire Ants in front of my house

I think you would be more satisfied with yourself if you found a queen during nuptial flight. Or bought a very small colony so you could watch it grow. Plus if you’re asking if it’s cruel that probably means you already think it is cruel. I don’t know if it’s cruel, but it’s certainly destructive.

Re: HELP! My ants aren't eating!

All ants will eat sugar water. And you need to feed them bugs. That’s what they eat. Forget about the eggs. You can give them food like that once in a while for variety, but their main diet is bugs. But I think they have been eating because to even make a major they have to feed the larvae more than...

Re: How to feed pheidole ants

Sugar water is probably better for that species at this stage because pheidile are super tiny and easy to for the workers to get stuck in the honey. You can soak a cotton ball in sugar water and then you won’t have to worry about any getting stuck. Then feed them bugs. You can buy crickets at the pe...

Re: Is it true that ants can't see red light?

It’s a myth. Insects can’t see the color red. That fact Has nothing to do with tinting light “red”. The film you use to cover your ants just dulls the light so it’s not as bright for the ants. You could also use blue, green, orange, black, ect film that would have the exact same effect.

Are you seeing the ants drink the honey? A lot of my ants don’t touch honey, but they all enjoy sugar water.

Re: Can queen ants that have mated still fly without shedding of wings?

The males never mate with the queen inside the nest. The males fly away and mate with queen alates who flew away from their own nest. As far as how long to keep the queen; if you feed her and she doesn’t just die you could keep her for a long time. I’ve had ants that didn’t lay eggs for 9 months, bu...

Re: New Queen, no brood, no new ants.

The brood exclusively needs protein to survive. If your not providing enough protein than the colony can not support larvae. Usually ants will eat cooked chicken but that may not be doing it for them. You need to give them bugs as that would be their main food source in the wild. Also see if they ac...

Re: Nest too big?

Just so you know aciculatus do extremely poorly without hibernation. They will also basically take almost all the seeds you offer them to store in their nest, especially before winter.
