Re: Letting air through

Ants need extremely low amounts of air because they don’t breathe air like mammals do. I’m sure the tube plugged with cotton will be fine. You could always get some screen mesh to put over the holes you made.

Re: Messor Barbarus queen not laying!

Do you feed them a sugar source? They can get sugar from seeds and grapes, but you should give them a steady source of sugar as well. Sugar water, honey, ect. Also in December that species should have been hibernating. Same with Jan, feb, mar. That’s probably why they haven’t laid eggs and you have ...

Re: Lasius social parasite

Unfortunately, the cold killed her. Now I know not to put anything that isn't Camponotus in the garage over the winter. Oh well- there's always this year. If the cold didn’t kill the camponotus than it’s unlikely it killed the claviger Queen. Those queens fly in October in Canada right before winte...

Re: Captured a colony a little confused

Ok I saw a picture of your ant colony. That colony looks quite large. So I bet that other queen was a queen alate. She just didn’t leave her nest for whatever reason last summer. The ants put up with her inside the nest for a while and may have actually tried to drag her out of their wood nest a bun...

Re: Camponotus Larva Not Growing

Just depends where you live. Camponotus like it hot. And by proper growing season I just mean basically when the night time temperature stays at around 20C or so instead of dropping down to like 10-15C which will slow down the larvae growth rate. If you want to speed up larvae development in your ho...

Re: Captured a colony a little confused

Are these very small colonies? Most camponotus only have 1 queen per nest. It’s possible there was two nests side by side, so close that the workers tolerated the other workers. Camponotus aren’t that hostile to other camponotus workers. When they encounter each other they usually just both turn aro...
