Escape Artist - Lasius & Fluon

Hello everyone, I have several colonies in early stages and my Lasius (I think Niger or alienus) has been walk-in over my PTFE 30 solution walls this evening. I’ve checked the perimeter with a light and I can see the residue line on the plastic tub. Any insights or advise would be great. I had opene...

Re: What food is favored among ants?

Hiya, my Lasius have enjoyed one of those jelly pots (smells like treacle) and honey so far. I’ve brought a pot of wax worms for them to try, and I’m going to get some mealworms. What about frozen fish food? I feel a bit strange feeding ant some crickets, as I’m rather fond of them. Also, any reccom...

Re: Ant barrier for Lasius sp.?

Thank-you, I hadn’t realised hat you could use the plain baby powder. I’ve managed to get my hands on some fluon after all, arriving in a couple of days.

Re: Ant barrier for Lasius sp.?

Hiya, I’m wondering the same. I’ve heard Vaseline isn’t so great and I’m struggling to buy either rubbing alcohol / surgical spirits and fluon in the UK.

Any help or suggestions would be great 🙂

Re: Ants next to musical instruments

Thanks guys, interesting to notice the difference between species. I moved them out the room tonight, but I might leave them be next time. It might actually be less stress for them than moving the box!

Ants next to musical instruments

Hello, I’ve set up some test tubes in my study for Lasius Niger founding Queens. They’re on the book shelf next to my harp. I’ve not practised my instrument yet since they’ve been placed there, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or advice. I wanted to know if it would be a good idea to move...

Re: Hello - Brand New Ant Keeper

Hiya, thank-you for looking. I made a collage of four ants and numbered them in the corner. The bottom right corner is the ant that I’m concerned about being Lasius umbratus (no 4).

Re: Want help on first ant farm

Hiya, I’ve found lots of resources a for this on either Pinterest or YouTube. There are mason jar ideas, with substrate for them to dig against the glass. There is a smaller jar inside taking yo space, causing them to dig near the glass. Or you could go with tubs & tubes. These are very simple, you ...

Re: Catching Queens During Nuptial Flight

I’ve found five, although let one go. They were all caught either in my garden or in my sisters garden. I really didn’t have to go far! 😅 My garden has a paved patio, so I would stand back and watch for movement. I was prepared to go searching in the woodland and meadow behind my house, but they wer...
