Re: Antsrule's Camponotus Subbarbatus Colony.
I know I'm two years late to the show, and it's unfortunate your subbarbatus colony died. I have one subbarbatus queen and two workers who survived their first captive hibernation, after I found her in a wood fragment last summer in central Iowa. I'm not sure she will survive either. It seems this s...

Re: My Average C. pennsylvanicus Colony Sizes
"Heated" is relative. I added no heat of my own, but I kept them in my warm 75-80ish kitchen all summer. AC is spotty in this apartment. The kitchen is warmest year round.

Re: New to Hobby - How to deal with Nuptial Flights
I was pretty darn sure that colonies of the same species in the same local areas use the weather as the hint for timing their flights. Any colony of the necessary size/age will produce alates, and will wait for the same environmental conditions to release their drones and queens. In some species, su...

Re: EMERGENCY MITES!!!!!
Well, just a minute, is there any way for you to include pictures of these mites?
Or a description?
Cuz not all mites are bad (ex. wood mites) and some bugs aren't mites at all (springtails).

My Average C. pennsylvanicus Colony Sizes
I thought I'd provide the opposite of an FAQ: a frequently asked answer. How big should a C. pennsylvanicus colony be after one summer? Here are the numbers from 5 of my colonies: Queen 1: 12 workers, 0 pupae Queen 2: 11 workers, 13 pupae Queen 3: 15 workers, 1 pupa Queen 4: 14 workers, 3 pupae Quee...

Re: Hibernation 2018
I was looking at wine coolers after they were discussed earlier, and I want to mention this one from Best Buy: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-29-bottle-wine-cooler-stainless-steel/6191207.p It has a minimum temperature that reaches the 45 or 46 degrees needed, and a max temp of 65 that's good...

Re: Hibernation 2018
I agree. You should continue checking on your ants and their hydration regularly, even while hibernating. Colder temperatures reduce their activity, but don't stop them. I also agree with some other posts on here that the coldest safe temperature for ants is around 8C or 46F. 0C is too close to the ...
