Raising my first Messor Barbarus colony - Milestone

Well, fellow antkeepers, I have finally done it. In the colony of Messor Barbarus that I am raising I have finally spotted their first major worker! I am absolutely elated with this sighting, since it started to look like disaster had struck. Not too long after I had received the colony some of the ...

Raising my first Messor Barbarus colony

Hello there! I'm a Dutchman who recently acquired a colony of Messor Barbarus with 20-ish worker ants. I've done some reading on this ant species and have learned some small tidbits observing my ants. I'm keeping the colony in a soil vivarium, and introduction went pretty smoothly. The workers immed...

Re: Just Another Newbie?

I'm a newby to the hobby myself, so I can only compare it to ones I've seen up close. If she has a black thorax, red head, and a brow-reddish backside she might be a Messor Barbarus. If she's wholly black but her backside has some browning rings between the segments she might be a Lasius Niger or La...

Re: Need help: Our queen just died - Messor Barbarus

Wardword, aren't Messor Barbarus Monogyn? Where I obtained my Messor colony they were labeled as such.
