Re: New Camp. Nova. Colony progress, Majors already !! ??

What I've found is that Camponotus sp. can produce majors like in your example if there is enough food around. Even though these majors are larger than the normal workers they tend to be quite small for majors. In other words they get bigger as the colony grows and so Camponotus sp. tend to have man...

Re: Camponotus Sp. Brood

Ant reproduction is very different from ours. The gender of an ant is decided on the amount of chromosomes rather than the different genes present. To make a queen or worker the queen needs a full set of chromosomes (half from herself and half from the male/males she mated with). However to make a d...

Re: polygyne question

Many monogyne sp. can found colonies with multiple queens but they eventually fight once the colony has grown to a certain size. This can even lead to all the queens dying through injuries. It's just a risk not worth taking.

Re: Just a question about when queens that do not fly.

Having watched some Myrmica flights first hand, I completely agree with you. The drones come out and even try to mount the ordinary workers until a female elate comes bursting out. I also noticed they don't seem to fly as much as Lasius as they tend to quickly land (or never even take off!). I only ...

Re: Just a question about when queens that do not fly.

That is the plan. However for Myrmica I want to try make a mating dome so ant keepers can replenish their queen count. Have to figure out some cinks that are already possible in my head so it will take work but it should be ready in time for when one of my Myrmica colonies mature in the future. Myr...

Re: Just a question about when queens that do not fly.

Maybe the workers even kill them off so they don't waste resources. Its a horrible thought but I've heard of polygynous colonies killing older queens as they produce less eggs than the younger ones.

Re: Europe | News

2 of my L.Niger queens now have workers. Hoping that the others follow in their footsteps before hibernation starts. Though I think my L.Flavus queens will be waiting till after hibernation along with my Myrmica Rubra queens. All of which have eggs or larvae.
