Good luck then, I'm sure with enough preparation you can do it. I was just checking location as Lasius Umbratus is supposedly only in southern England, so everything makes sense.

http://imgur.com/gallery/MCsXXxV ^pics, since my first attempt failed... Hi, I can confirm with 99.999999999% certainty that that is Lasius Umbratus queen. May I also ask for the general location of her capture as I am interested, I've been Ant-Keeping in the Uk for some time and have never come ac...

Re: What is she doing???

Umm, firstly can we have more details about the circumstances of her capture.
But so far it seems like she has a damaged back right leg and she is probably been hurt.
May I ask why there is a larvae?
If you took the queen from a nest she probably hasn't mated.
Hopes this helps

Re: Feeding

My advice is to shake this up a bit to keep the ants interested (or they might be full of protein currently so just aren't reacting as excited as you would expect). You could use protein jellies, just don't rely on them as a 24/7 options, I got mine online for an Ant specific store. Another option d...

Re: Baby Powder/Alchohol Barrier?

Sorry I don't use Baby powder/rubbing alcohol combo, but I use PTFE and it works just fine ( I got mine from an ant online store). Hopes this helps

Re: Light brown almost pale Lasius queens.

I think you've come across some alates which have just eclosed from their pupae (cocoons) and so their exoskeleton is still hardening and therefore is a lighter colour. So I would say still Lasius Niger.

Re: Quick question about lasius niger

When larvae spin cocoon they produce the silk using special glands. They might only need some substrate to grip to the floor so they can make the cocoon more easily. I have found that this isn't necessary, but can help.

Re: Should I feed living food to my ants for science? Lasius Niger.

I don't know about mealworms, Lasius in my experience can't get through the exoskeleton. I have always cut them open before.
