Re: Messor barbarus queen not laying
I was keeping them at around 10-15 C which is from what I read a good temperature for this species (for hibernation) For hibernation 10-15 is great, but if you lower their temperature to that range, even in late summer, they'll obviously slow down adapting to the change. Summing everything up I'd a...

Re: Messor barbarus queen not laying
It depends... what temperature were you keeping them when they became less active?

Re: Messor barbarus queen not laying
Messor Barbarus usually hibernates between late November to late February (more or less). Hibernating them earlier won't necessarily make them active in this period. This because ants usually have an "internal clock" that tells them when to rest and when to be active. So, if you see them not eating ...

Re: Need Information about my Queen Please
Correct me if I'm wrong. From the pictures it's hard to see the workers, but I'm positive they are all black except their thorax (middle section) which is dark red. If that's the case I'm 99.9% sure that's Lasius Emarginatus (which can also be found in your country). I had many colonies of this spec...

Re: Ant Queen and Workers ID, SW Louisiana
I'm guessing it's Camponotus castaneus. I've never seen this species here. Well, I've checked on another site (Antmaps.org) and it says Camponotus castaneus is actually present in Louisiana, so you should be right! :) About the food I've noticed with my colonies that the younger they are, the more ...

Re: My journey keeping a Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Colony
From my experience with different colonies I'd recommend to try again next year, even with stuff the absolutely dislike. Once there'll be more members they'll be hungrier and will accept any kind of food more easily. My C. Barbaricus periodically consume: Dubia Roaches Crickets Protein Jelly Spiders...

Re: Need Help Identifying Queen!
Sorry, been busy with university too. I'm not used to Australian species at all, but in order to get an almost certain ID I'd wait for some workers to hatch. It would be much easier that way, even though it does look like Brachyponera sp. About all those queens, be careful not to get overwhelmed onc...

Ponera clavicornis Ponera incerta Ponera leae Ponera selenophora Ponera swezeyi Ponera tenuis If you want to look up all available species in your region yourself you may want to use Antmaps.org, such a useful too...

Re: Messors attacking each other.
Yeah, thinking about it, Messor is really sensitive towards vibrations. Whenever they feel some they go in panic mode.
Could that be another hypothesis?
