First off, I would like to congratulate you on the fantastic progress/success you have had with this particular Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony. I am very jealous. They have always been my favorite. I have a colony as well but did not heat them. As a result they have underperformed. I wont hijack ...

Re: Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Journal | By AntsOntario
So when do majors usually start to arrive? Honestly, I am thinking there is no set date. It seriously just depends on how successful your queen wants to be. I noticed with this colony they weren't afraid of protein like most young Camponotus colonies are when they just start out, (1 - 5 workers). I...

Looks awesome. I'm a first time ant keeper that has three yet unidentified test tube colonies. I notice you are located in Ontario, what is your preferred source for different supplies (food, housing, etc). Hello, In terms of food I regularly frequent my backyard as a primary food source. It's quit...

Re: a pro con post of wild vs store bought food.
In my opinion, wild insects initially are nothing but a gamble. I did not know if my yard had been sprayed, or anywhere around me. I just took a chance on a colony that wasn't doing all that well anyway. They seemed to be fine going onto months later. This is when I started feeding all of my colonie...

Oh and I forgot! This colony has lost it's first worker (to my sight there could be more) to unknown reasons.

Re: Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Journal | By AntsOntario
Wow my queen is taking a break from laying right now but there seems to be development on my brood so I'm hoping I can get the last few larva done before the weather here drops. There's been alot of funky weather patterns in ontario this year I don't doubt another 20+ day coming still so hopefully ...

Re: Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Journal | By AntsOntario
This colony is at 34 workers with about 8 more pupa left to enclose. The rest of their larva has stopped development as the temperatures have dropped to a low of 14 degrees. I never knew I'd be putting my ants into hibernation so soon but it seems to be the case. Last year September temperatures we...
