Pleasant Surprise

I had been raising a P. occidentalis queen in a clear plastic tupperware container filled with soil, in hopes of raising a colony. For the first few weeks she was fairly active, travelling on the surface and gathering seeds I gave her. Then a couple months passed with no sign of activity, and I had ...

Re: Fungal growth

I checked back after going to the doctors for a couple hours and found that they had moved over anyway. Seems like they decided it was a good idea after all.

Fungal growth

I have a small T. immigrans colony in a test tube, and I recently noticed a white mold growing on the floor of the test tube. I believe it is from excess water and cotton, as the ants dug a hole in the cotton blocking the water, and a small amount may have leaked. I tried connecting them to a fresh ...

Re: Caught a Harvester Ant Queen.

I placed my queen into a plastic container half filled with slightly damp soil, and she took to it quite well, digging a nest and occasionally emerging to dig or grab a seed.

Forelius pruinosis care

I recently caught a F. pruinosis queen, not from nuptial flight, but rather I captured her from a wild colony moving to a new nest, and I saw her scurrying along the line. I wasn't able to gather any workers, but I did catch the queen. I placed her in a test tube with some food, and I was wondering ...

Re: Pogonomyrmex occidentalis Setup

Congratulations on the founding of your colony of the pogonomyrmex species. Here is a piece of useful advice. Pogonomyrmex have a very distinct sting that can be very painful so make sure to wear gloves. You probably already knew that but I wanted to say it just in case. Yeah, having lived around t...

Re: Camponotus Sp.

There are smaller Camponotus from the Myrmentoma subgenus that are normally 1cm long, but I am assuming that she is larger than that. The shininess, along with your description, would most likely make this Camponotus novaeboracensis , which are occasionally found that far west. That's quite a dista...
