Starting colony

Is it possible for me to catch a queen ant, and then put her in a bin filled with dirt or something so she can make her own chamber and come out when she is ready or should I just keep putting ant queens in test tubes?

Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis

Does anyone know if these ants sting? I have seen tons of these wild colonies in my area and they seem like a good species to keep.
