Doesn't have to be super light. A little light from some LEDs might do already. Also keeps costs low.

Unless you sealed the testtube, there should be enough Air coming in through the cotton. Of course the cotton shouldn't be too tight. If you have trouble pulling out your cotton, then it's too tight.
