Re: I found a queen when it wasn't having it's nuptial flight

Alright so first of all. It would be helpful to get a picture for identification. As close and clear as possible. Second queens usually don't lay any eggs during hibernation since the eggs still need some heat to grow. Third if you know the exact species it will be much easier to find out what their...

Re: White fuzzy mold in ant tower

Hello there, I think if I'm right this might just be the usual mold that would grow if something is too wet. I got that with my herbs in the kitchen. Like I sometimes add too much water so the soil stays moist for too long. So what I do if I think it's too much I remove the top layer a little bit or...

Re: I am new and I need help.

Hallöchen, I don't know what materials Lasius Niger prefer but on the side itself it should give you some basic informations. I also guess that they like it a bit moist so perhaps also get yourself a spraying bottle. (weißt schon. Sowas wie manche vernarrten Gärdner haben, um ein wenig Wasser auf di...

Re: Messor Barabarus hibernation

It's pretty odd to have the colony go into hibernation this late. But you should keep them at about 16-18 degrees. I don't know if they are doing fine inside the fridge or not. Sadly I probably won't be able to test this since I don't have an infinite amount of messor barbarus colonies at my disposi...

Re: dracula ant eating pupa

To give you a little info, there are videos about Dracula Ants on the AntsCanada Channel. So just go and check it out and have a look. He explains a bit about them and it is quite interesting that they drink from their larvae and puppae and such but I guess they also eat soft insects or insect meat....

Re: New ant keeper: questions about handling diapause

Hello there, To give you a quick and short answer. Lasius Niger should be hibernating already but don't panic now. Sometimes they start hibernation later but usually from end of october until end of march at 5-8°C I don't know about feeding them during hibernation but I'm not going to. They had a go...

Re: I need help

I have read a little here and there in this post but it seems you have trouble with moving the colony to a proper setup and I thought I should add some of my experience here. So I had a similar problem but I was about to hibernate all my colonies anyway so I had to make sure that the setup is clean....

Re: Hibernation temperature for Camponotus sp.

Hello there, I checked very quickly on this webside https://www.antstore.net/shop/de/Ameisen/Ameisen-aus-Suedeuropa/Camponotus-barbaricus.html which says that they usually hibernate from end of october until the end of march at about 15°C. What is their current temperatur? You can put them in a corn...

Re: Tetramorium Emergency!

I think I got bad news for you. Your Tetramorium probably are monogyn so they don't have more than one queen. You should keep them in seperate containers. About your shattered testtube situation it probably is difficult to get a quick replacement for such a situation but I guess by now you have foun...

Re: I'd like help with hibernation

So about lasius niger, they should be inside your fridge now. if they are still in your room with 19-20°C then put them in a place which is a bit colder so they don't get a shock or something and then put them inside your fridge which should be arround 5-9°C. Messor barbarus starts hibernation at th...
