Re: How long befoer nanitics leave the nest to forage?

Now I remember for whom I wanted to show that the queen should be able to get out. Recorded this video recently which shows my queen trying to climb up. Even tho here she doesn't manage to climb up she definetly has managed it in the pas...

Re: Mold on the cotton of my test tube

Makre sure the new testtube is well covered and doesn't have much light. Next uncover their current testtube to expose them to some light. This might make them move out. If that doesn't help then you could try to kind of shake them out of their old test tube into the new one. I don't know what tools...

Re: How to deal with mold in test tube?

Hey, What I can recommend is, prepare a new testtube and offer it as a new save space for your colony. Next you should try removing some of the mold but of course carefully and without killing the ants. I also would not attach a foraging area yet as they can be fed with a bit of honey. :) Also honey...

Re: Queen ant keeping her wings

Well the thing with unfertile queens is that they can still produce eggs but they will turn into drones / male alates. For a worker ant she needs to be mated but she could still lay eggs for the nuptial flights. :) Some sort of self sacrifice.

it's not normal for queens to lay a single egg! Still, feed her sugar and protein, don't stress her out and hopefully it will work out!
I can only agree with this. Perfect sumary for my novel that I would have written. xD

Re: Queen ant keeping her wings

So to clarify things here. Queens sometimes just keep their wings forever or until they fall / break off. Had a case like that and I called them fashion queens. xD Next even unfertile queens sometimes just break their wings off for no reason and it probably bamboozels people even more. What I usuall...

Re: Semi-caustral or Caustral queen ant?

Yeah, well I saw a bunch of videos to say to fill up to three quarters of water. I found the ant queen in WA, Perth. Thanks so much for helping me! You guys are awesome. I'm very new to this, so I guess I'll be asking a lot of questions... I really hope the queen ants are caustral, because I don't ...

Re: My Messor Barbarus Colony (Discussion and Info)

It seems that you have a lot of experience with this species, you wouldn't mind making a Care Sheet for them at https://forum.AntsCanada.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5675&start=40 I want to expand what we have there but I can only keep so many colonies and I prefer the care sheets to be made from people...

Re: Semi-caustral or Caustral queen ant?

A trick I sometimes use is I zoom in with my phone's camera when it's focused and try to get a good shot. Doesn't always work tho. For the testubes, you could have used a little less water. I think about 5ml would have done the trick too. For the dead queen, don't worry. Sometimes they even start th...

Re: My Messor Barbarus Colony (Discussion and Info)

I keep feeding my colony some mealworms and from the looks of it they love them. I am rather surprised by this as they sometimes seem to be a bit picky about their seeds as they sometimes just wouldn't take them all but leave some out after a while. I could also imagine that a lack of insects might ...
