Propolis powder is probably not bad for your ants, though it may not work well as a barrier. Is the powder sticky? I know that normal propolis is sticky, so if this is you shouldn't use it. I wouldn't try it, since it would probably result in a relatively thick baby powder barrier. I would actually suggest using pure baby powder applied with a dry cottonball, so the barrier is thinner and thus more slippery. Ants do produce waste, and you do need to clean that waste up. The waste that they produce is mainly uneaten food and dead workers after a while, though ants do defecate. The best way to keep an ant setup clean is to not let it get dirty in the first place , everything is much, much easier that way....
