Re: Lasius ants that sting

I still do want to try it if I am honest but I am waiting for even higher numbers from the colony just to be safe and I breed the worms as a free feeder source so I am thinking of grabbing a smaller one that is pale and soft from a fresh molt.

Re: Multiple Myrmica sp Queen Help

It's a tricky one that is a hit and miss. You can gather 7 queens from the same area and 3 or 4 might survive. Not sure why they do this but it is like they have some sort of standard the other queens did not seem to meet. That and Myrmica species are almost impossible to tell apart by looking at th...

Re: Affordable Protein

Hi, does anyone gut load the mealworms? If you do, what with? Yes, I personally always make sure there is fresh fruit, potato peels and oat meal. I mean always. This also reduces the risk of them eating each other from starving. When I really want to gut load them tho I crush up high vitamin and pr...

Re: Coming out of hibernation.

You don't.
Feed them as soon as they wake up so they have the energy to get back into their daily routine and so they can begin to get protein for the young.

Re: Ant barriers in a Paludarium

Check out some of AC vids on YouTube. He cuts the top of a bottle off, puts the cable through it and covers that cable and bottle top in his barrier. This seems to have not failed him so that would be a good start.

Re: Cleaning ant graveyards

Monitor it a bit more first. Ants have less active hours throughout the day and if you catch that time you should have better luck at cleaning out an area of the formicarium depending on the shape and design that is. For my ants, early afternoon is a quiet time so I generally do my cleaning then. Ho...

Re: Capturing Wild Colony

If you can find the entrances to the nest block of as many as you can and if possible leave two open. One entrance will be for your trap of choice and the second will be used for driving the ants out. When you have that done use a lemon and water mixture and pour it into one entrance, leave it for a...

Re: New Ant Keeper from Ireland.

My Axolotl just stared the ants out of it while I took the pic but it's uploaded anyway.
I find it amusing how curious he is by them lol

Re: New Ant Keeper from Ireland.

Use http://antmaps.org to help you out. It's not 100% and it does not seem to be county specific just country.

Ah that suits me fine. I will give them to your mam so.
I will add a new photo to the Google drive I previously shared.
