In Northern IL I’ve been seeing myrmica alates the last few days and finding them in the pool. Some species must have flown recently.

Caught a crematogaster queen yesterday in Northern Illinois but she was not doing well and appeared dehydrated.

Formica subsericea flew yesterday in northern IL. Many queens still out searching for the perfect spot to found a colony.

Are both of those species nest raiders throughout their life as a colony or can they do just fine on their own beyond the founding stage?
