Hey everyone! I'm reviving this thread because I have new photos of the mystery ants! It's been a year, and we went back to the nest site today. Formica lemani or F. cuncicularia . Sounds more like a colony relocation than a raid. The carrying behavior is common. Thank you, Batspiderfish. I didn't know the carrying behaviour was common. Mystery, large ant workers in Hampshire UK

My son and I came across an ant colony at a lowland heath area in Hampshire UK. The ant workers, black in colour, are larger and faster than any ant we've encountered in our garden.
