Re: Trap Jaw Gamergates?

Hi AntsDakota! The study concluded this:

"male production in the absence of the queen was performed by only a limited portion of the workers."

But, yes, I will consider your advice. Thank you so much! :)

Re: Trap Jaw Gamergates?

Thanks, ClashOwnBash! I also found this study http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.186.7671&rep=rep1&type=pdf It was actually done in the mid-90's! The study says that when Odontomachus Simillimus are orphaned, some of the younger workers will acquire strongly developed ovaries a...

Trap Jaw Gamergates?

Good day everyone!

I read somewhere that some trap jaws are known to have gamergates. I found a colony here in my city in the Philippines (Ondotomachus Simillimus, I guess), and I'm wondering if I could collect just enough number to raise a new colony without a queen. Thanks!

Re: Oecophylla smaragdina

Hi! I'm Eric from the Philippines. I caught my first weaver ant queen two months ago, and now it has around 7 nanitics. 5 days ago I released the young colony from its container into a small pot with a ficus maclellandii plant. They're doing great so far with the open setup. I just placed a barrier ...

Re: Help With Weaver Ant Queen!

Thanks for your help, guys! Here's my weaver ant colony now. There are about 7 workers already. I moved them from their previous container into this small ficus plant. Will move them to a larger plant as soon as the colony gets bigger. :)

Re: Help With Weaver Ant Queen!

Thanks! I tried feeding her with honey mixed with water and she liked it! I'm not sure I can transfer her to a test tube setup now coz she already has eggs. Or can I? And can I feed her with freshly killed insects? Thanks!

Help With Weaver Ant Queen!

Good day, everyone! I caught a weaver ant queen yesterday morning (Philippines) and decided to house it inside a transparent box until I can get a test tube. However, when I checked just now, its wings had already fallen and it has laid some eggs! I know it's good news. The bad news is, I'm not sure...

Re: Bullet Ant or Carpenter Ant?

Thanks, guys! It's most likely an Odontoponera. My first guess was bullet ant, too, but from what I've learned, bullet ants do bite and sting. This one doesn't. It's not aggressive at all and is often played with by little children.

Here's another photo. I apologize for the not so good quality. By the way, the ant is about half an inch long, if that would help. Thanks!
