Re: New to ant keeping and need advice!

For the test tube set up, I advise using cotton as a method of keeping the water in. For your queen in the soil jar, do you have proper ventilation in the jar? It might explain the mold growth, but I am not so sure. The other queen about 3mm in length, you do not need to feed her right away. You can...

Re: i need ideas for food soon

I would check your local pet store to see if they sell feeder crickets. I purchase crickets and freeze them to feed my Formica colony. Some sites state that Formica are able to get legumes but mine will not eat any. I think they are picky eaters (my colony at least). One safe method you could try ar...

Re: Formicariums for Tetramorium

I have not used the large ant tower as of yet, but if you are going to move them into one, I would wait until the colony is around 40-50 workers. It might be a little daunting for them at first so be patient if they do not move immediately into the ant tower.

Re: Pavement Ant Nuptial Flight - Sacramento, CA

Pavement ants from my experience has been in mid May to the end of May. I live in San Joaquin County and that is when I usually see them flying. I do not see many flying in June or July. Tetramorium are common in my area, just look for a colony, and keep track of it from time to time, you will notic...

Prenolepis imparis flight questions

For those who live in North America, one of the first species to begin their nuptial flights in the the year is Prenolepis (aka the winter ant). If you have caught this genus early in the year, may I ask where you were able to locate the new queens and when was the time period you had caught the gen...

Formica Diets

So I have a new Formica colony going about and as far as feeding goes, sugar is fine but protein has been odd. I provide feeder crickets to them but I would like to know if other protein sources are good for them as well, if any of you have any tips, that will be helpful.

Re: Feeding ants chicken wings or other human food

Some ants in the wild are not picky with what is available such as Tetramorium. Others have preferences. Ants prefer hemolymph (bug blood) in general, so you won't find it in human foods. If you are going to provide human foods, be sure the food is not dry, they will not be interested as much. If yo...

Re: Managing humidity etc newbie colony

it would be best to look into what species your son is going to catch or will catch based on nuptial flight schedules as others have mentioned. A hybrid nest from the AntsCanada store will list a general humidity level that will be present in the nest once you have it set up. Some Ant genera will re...

Re: How often do you feed your newer Tetramorium colonies

I have posted this on another post but Tetramorium will eat just about anything. Legumes, such as walnuts, pumpkin kernels, chicken, ham, crickets, roaches, honey, fruit you name it. Sugar and protein options are broad for this genus. Just ensure that the protein is wet/fresh. They will lose interes...

Additional identification needed

So I believe I was wrong with what I thought was a Camponotus queen earlier this summer but from the manner in which this colony is growing, they are already at about 20+ workers after 2 months and after doing a bit more research, I think the colony is of the genus Formica . I have placed a photo to...
