Treatment of unidentified species?

I'm curious, Let's say you capture a lovely little lady, you're 99.9% sure she's a queen, but you're having trouble identifying her. Maybe you narrow it down to 2 or 3 possibilities so you post to the forum and get... 3 or 4 more possibilities. Is there a de facto treatment? Claustral vs. Semi-Claus...

Proper protein?

So I have no issues with feeder crickets or the ilk when my colonies get bigger. But for now I'm just dealing with a Parasitic Lasius founding setup with a tiny outworld so I was hoping to take some shortcuts. I have a ton of alternately avalible pet foods; reptile/ hermit crab pellets, blood worms,...

Re: Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Queen

I have both my C. Pennsylvanicus queens in my media cabinet under the TV in the living room. With the cable box, modem, router, and xbox there's plenty of free heat to keep them comfortable.

Re: Catching Smaller Queens

I'm new too, and I thought the same thing. Then I went out with the intent of looking for ants that were not camponotus. I caught everything not on a mound I could - worker, male, queen it didn't matter. Even caught a couple of camponotus workers by mistake. I then used a 5x pocket magnifier to chec...

Can L. Umbratus host... L. Umbratus?

So I found a couple of L. Umbratus queens and have been introducing locally caught "wild" Lasius Neoniger workers in an attempt to found the queens. However in no uncertain terms the queens seem to have taken a liking to killing the workers (18 between the two over the course of a week). The only ot...

Re: A day as jimmy's ant

Hi,

The one thing I learned while browsing these forums is that the gel farms suck. The gel isn't that nutritious for them and actually causes them to enter a stupor. Now that's not to say you couldn't use it the setup with another digging medium. I just wouldn't use the gel if I were you.

Re: I'm new/ test tubes/ ant identification

Welcome! I'm rather new here too. So take my advice with a grain of salt. Out of frustration I ordered my tubes form amazon. The seemed to have an ok selection that seemed to work. As for identification; antweb.org. Under the "Bioregion" tab select "Nearctic" - that'll give you every ant species in ...

Re: P. Imparis - how long should you wait?

Valid points on all accounts. You are correct I was overly lax with my fertile prefixes. I will endeavor to prevent such future errors. However, as I am new to the hobby, assuming optimal (stress free, clean, warm, moist, dark) test tube setup - how long would you keep a fully alate specimen of the ...

Re: P. Imparis - how long should you wait?

Maybe once a week, I'd say every 6-12 days. (only three times since capture) Northern Massachusetts. Walking across my picnic table one evening. Standard test tube setup - wrapped in foil to block the light - in a small cardboard box that holds my test tube setups, in my media cabinet to provide heat.

P. Imparis - how long should you wait?

I caught a P. imparis back on 4/26.

How long should I wait before deeming her infertile?
