Re: Camponotus nearcticus

When I peeked at the colony today, the queen was laying partially on her side, apparently struggling. Her abdomen was balloted, and a worker seemed awfully interested in smelling the tip of her gaster. I believe she may have been in the process of laying an egg. She is fine now.

Re: Lasius social parasite

Unfortunately, the cold killed her. Now I know not to put anything that isn't Camponotus in the garage over the winter. Oh well- there's always this year.

Re: Lasius ants that sting

Yup, this is still happening. Took my ants out of hibernation and when they were ready for their first protein feed (frozen crickets) they went to town on the poor, already dead cricket. Stinging or spraying like their life's depended on it. Which is not the case cos it was already dead. I have a c...

Re: Ant Colony Emergency!

My colony of Lasius Niger is not doing well. Long story short, the queen had around 30 workers when i moved her into the nest. Now she has 2. I've given them protein syrup, ant nectar, and water, and they aren't eating it. What can i do to save them? (If anything) :?: Some ants are rather p...

Re: Captured a colony a little confused

So I planned to get into antkeeping this year but it happened a little faster than I thought. I run a small Nature Center for a Girl Scout camp and I also manage the property. A friend and myself decided we were going to add ants to the center and we bought 2 kits from AntsCanada the Formica kit an...

Re: Odd behaviour

I have a Lasius Niger queen in a test tube setting with about 6 workers. My second queen as the first one died over winter :(. Anyway the water in her first test tube has run out a while ago. I set her up so she has a tube to a magnifying dish (that i can remove the lid and feed into) and then anot...

Re: I have some P.Imparis how should i take care of them?

I just caught six P.Imparis. I know that they're polygamous and I put three in one tube and 3 in the other, should I put them all together? What temp should I keep them at? How long will it take for them to grow? Also they all have licked the tips of their gasters and I watched all of them mate so ...

Re: Camponotus nearcticus

Despite the cool temperatures lately, the larvae have been developing rapidly. And I believe the queen may have laid a few eggs.

Re: Ant genus for starting

So after spending the whole day doing research I have decided to go with Camponotus ants as my first go. Question though is if I collect several queens for test tube set ups am I able to eventually put them into the same hybrid nest? The act of multiple queens founding a colony together is known as...

Re: what should I buy!

I love the AntsCanada products but unfortunately they cost too much and i don't have my own credit card (cause i'm only 12(I might be older when this is read)) and my parents aren't willing to pay the cost for a formicarium. if any of you think there is a better way to get an ant colony please tell...
