Re: Prenolepis Imparis Flights Oroville/California

Good luck! It may have been the wind keeping them down, or maybe the nest you've found is too young for reproductives. Either way, I hope you find a prenelopis imparis queen! Only time I've found them was on a beach near one of the posts for a walk way. Wind was low, but it was evening time and chil...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Good luck ArizonaAnts! Hope you are successful in finding fertile queens! Same to everyone else on the hunt as well :) Good luck! Also, my Camponotus, Odontomachus and Formica queens are still kicking. Similar to Arizona Anta, these ladies (Morse so their workers) are gathering up protein for the Qu...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

That's a cool setup you've got there Kherafox. This is an exciting stage! Watching as your colony slowly grows. I've not seen the straw portal trick using in action before. It looks like a good addition to the setup. Happy anting!

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Wow, that's crazy! I never would have imagined an ant would go spider hunting! I have a small update on my Camponotus queen. She has two niantics! A few more pupae, and some eggs are developing nicely. The photos are sadly of poor quality. Next update I'll have access to my computer and be abl...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Welcome to Nate440 and Shinde! Glad to meet you! I'm also leaning towards a Formica species for you Nate440. That back-shape trick is pretty darn clever!

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Wow! That is a unique looking queen that guy found. Thanks for the link Hawkeye. Wouldn't that be something if a new ant species was found! I'm feeling the Camponotus queen will be having a few workers soon on my end. She had a few pupae last I looked and I'll give it another few days before I peek ...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Look under bricks, and flower pots too! If you're worried about spiders and scorpions, put on a pair of work/shop gloves (or just glove your strong hand), and I doubt anything will be able to bite/sting you. I've had good luck with bricks and pavers hiding new Queens under them. Happy hunting! P.S. ...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

From my limited experience and research, @Kherafox, ants seem to use multiple ques to determine when they have nuptial flights. Humidity is one, and I thought wind would be another. I've seen ant queens out on calm sunny days and even in a stiff breeze! Most of mine I have caught were either on warm...

Re: Welcome to the Camponotus Crew!

Thanks guys, you are correct! I do have the option to try again. Trial and error, as for temp, I keep them in a room that isn't Air conditioned, and here in FL it's getting hot. Curiously, the socks I keep their tubes in are great at insulation. So the temp stays pretty consistent around the mid 80'...
