Hoping for species ID for GAN
Colony 1 was found in April, under a rock, trying to get warm. The rest were caught during nuptial flights in the middle of May.
I believe colony 1 to be formica sp. Very skittish ants. Queen is 10mm. Workers are various sizes.
Colony 2 is believed a Camponotus sp and is 17-18 mm. The workers are 7mm
Colony 3 is also believed a Camponotus sp but different from #1. The queen is a little smaller at approx 16 mm
Colony #4 the queen is smaller, at 15 mm and seems to have a more streamlined body style.
Queens 1 & 2 are believed to be the same species as the colony 4 queen but may provide additional photos.

Pictures do not work
Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
Keeping Tetramorium immigrans, Tapinoma Sessile

Unfortunately, mediafire is not terribly cooperative. If you right click on "image" and choose view image, the link takes you to mediafire. Click on "view". Then just back arrow to the forum.

If the first post is too much of a pita, will try a different host:
Colony 1 Likely Formica, jumpy ants, the queen is 10mm the workers are 5mm, Southern B.C. Found under a rock in April
Colony 2 Likely Camponotus sp Southern B.C. during nuptial flight middle of May. Largest queen 17-18mm workers are 7 mm
Colony 3 Different species from above. Found in nuptial flight middle of May. Smaller at 16 mm
Colony 4 looks different from the 2 & 3 colonies. Found in nuptial flight a week later. 15mm. Two other queens possibly the same species. Different pictures included.

Re: Hoping for species ID for GAN
The Formica colony cannot be identified to the species with this picture.
The first two Camponotus are either C. modoc or C. pennsylvanicus, depending on how hairy the head is. The gasters on the first colony are expanded and filled with food. The last Camponotus queen is likely C. laevigatus, based on the shininess.

If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.
